Gloria Alexandria Dunmore Singleton, born March 27, 1938, to George Alexander Dunmore and Earline White Dunmore in Charleston, South Carolina better known to Gloria as “Grant Hill” aka “F” Street. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to her high school sweetheart, Herman D. Singleton, I., on November 16, 1963. They were married for 62 years. They are proud parents to Herman D. Singleton, II and Tasha L’Mia Singleton.

She attended Henry P. Archer Elementary School and Burke High School, graduating with honors in the class of 1956. She was a 1960 graduate of Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. While matriculating at Benedict College, she was voted by her peers as Miss Senior. She was initiated in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Psi Chapter in 1958. Additionally, Gloria did further studies at the Citadel Military College.

Gloria was employed by Charleston County Public Schools for thirty-two years working at Courtnay Middle School her entire career. She loved her students dearly. Her standards were high, showing agape love to all her students. In so doing, she assisted the many families of the students she taught with basic needs. Gloria actively engaged the students in numerous plays and musicals in helping them to develop their character. Because of her passion for teaching and devotion to her students she was awarded “Teacher of the Year”.

As a child, Gloria’s thirst for good music and playing the piano was her joy. Even though there was not a piano in the family home, Gloria would practice using the kitchen table as her imaginary piano. Her skills on the piano did not go unnoticed as she continued to play for many churches in the Charleston area.

Gloria began her Christan journey at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where she was baptized under the leadership of Rev. J.J. Maxwell. She served faithfully as the church’s Organist for several years. Additionally, she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Trustee and President of the Pulpit Aid Board. She later moved her membership to New Tabernacle Fourth Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess, Organist, Sunday School Teacher, and participated in the Seniors Ministry. In February of 2024, Gloria received theCertificate of Membership at Greater St. Luke AME Church joining her family.

Gloria was a member of Progressive Chapter #310 Order of Eastern Star. She was a Pearl Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Gamma Xi Omega Chapter.

On Sunday, April 26, 2026, after a courageous fight, the Angels welcomed her with open arms. The battle is over; Gloria has made her way to her heavenly home.

She was preceded in death by her parents George Alexander Dunmore and Earline White Dunmore, siblings Clara Bozeman (Oceola) and Barbara Ford (William).

Her memories will always be cherished by her loving husband, Herman I, children Herman II (Victoria) and Tasha L’Mia, Winston Marsellus (her Fur Grandbaby) her loyal and devoted caregiver, Ms. Betty Ann Johnson. Her Sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Delores S. Jenkins, Lucille S. Pinckney (Rufus) Robert L. Singleton, Jr., Carolyn S.
